Holiday traditions. Decorating is a holiday tradition that is practically universal. Have you ever stopped to wonder where these traditions started? Whether it be hanging the stockings over the fireplace or stringing lights on the tree, these actions are rooted in tradition.

Outdoor lights are a staple of holiday decorations. Multi-colored or white. Icicles or traditional bulbs. Lights are incorporated in nearly every household décor during the holiday season. But where did the tradition begin? Well, following the invention of the lightbulb, Thomas Edison introduced the first outdoor light display. He displayed the lights outside of his lab which was located near the railroad tracks. Each night, people passing by could marvel at the display.

In 1890, with the permission of Thomas Edison, Edward Johnson created the first string of Christmas lights. These became mass produced and sold at the popular department stores. The trend of outdoor lighting however did not take off until the turn of the 20th century when the cost became more efficient.

Outdoor lighting has since evolved since the 1800s. Today, LED lights have replaced the traditional bulbs that were used in the strands. Cost and efficiency has made this tradition flourish. During the holiday season, let there be lights!
