Wreaths are a classic holiday staple. Real or artificial, evergreen or holly - wreaths are symbolic of the holiday season. The tradition of hanging wreaths is rooted in a deep history.

The Early Romans began gifting evergreen during the holidays as a sign of well wishes and good health for the spring ahead. As time wore on, the evergreen was fashioned into a circular shape to symbolize unity and eternity.

In Christian tradition, the evergreen wreath is used as a symbol of Christ's suffering and defeat of death. Christians also utilize the holly wreath, with its sharp, pointed leaves, to signify the crown of thorns.

The act of placing a wreath on an outside door or window is performed as an invitation to bring forth the spirit of Christmas into the home. The early traditions surrounding the gifting of the wreath are now simply expressed as decoration.

Today's wreaths are often embellished with lights and ornaments, but the sentiment remains the same. Wreath be with you.
